Entry Clearance Applications For UK Work Visa Dependants
Entry clearance applications for UK work visa dependants are required for eligible dependant partners and dependant children applying from outside the UK. They must apply to join a main applicant who holds valid permission, or is applying at the same time, under a UK work visa route that permits dependants.
In most cases, dependants must obtain entry clearance before travelling to the UK, as entry without valid clearance can result in refusal. Applications are assessed under the Immigration Rules and must meet validity, suitability, and eligibility requirements, including relationship and financial requirements.

Who can apply for Entry Clearance as a Dependant of Work Visa Holders
Eligible applicants for entry clearance as a UK work visa dependant are limited to specific family members defined under the Immigration Rules. Dependant partners may apply if they are the spouse or civil partner of the main applicant, or an unmarried partner who has been in a genuine and subsisting relationship with the main applicant similar to a marriage or civil partnership for at least 2 years.
Dependant children may apply if they are under the age of 18 on the date of application, or if they are aged 18 or over but were last granted permission as a dependant child of the main applicant or their partner.
Other relatives, including parents, siblings, and adult children who have not previously held dependant permission, are not eligible to apply under the work routes. Where there are exceptional, compelling and compassionate circumstances relating to a person who cannot meet the requirements for entry clearance as a dependant partner or child, the application may be considered outside the Immigration Rules. Such applications are considered outside the Immigration Rules and do not form part of the standard dependant entry clearance requirements. Any such application must be considered in accordance with the Home Office guidance on Leave Outside the Immigration Rules.

What Conditions Apply After Entry Clearance Is Granted to Work Visa Dependants?
After entry clearance is granted, dependant partners and dependant children are subject to specific conditions under the Immigration Rules. They are not permitted to access public funds. They are permitted to work in the UK, including self-employment and voluntary work, but they must not take employment as a professional sportsperson or sports coach, unless they are dependants of a person granted permission under the UK Ancestry route. Dependants are also allowed to study in the UK, although those over the age of 18 who wish to study a discipline covered by Appendix ATAS must obtain an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate for their course or research before starting it.
The length of permission granted to a dependant is linked to the immigration status of the main applicant, with additional rules applying where parents hold different immigration statuses or expiry dates. Throughout their stay, dependants must comply with all conditions attached to their permission.
